Do I need to be a Grandmother to join?
No, you do not have to be a Grandmother. Our members are called “Grandmothers” or “Grandothers”. We are a diverse collection of women who are passionate in supporting Grandmothers in Africa in assisting them with education, nutrition, security, and housing for their grandchildren, many of whom are stricken with HIV and AIDS.
Where do you meet?
The “Grannies” meet in a meeting room at the Shatford Centre, 760 Main Street, Penticton, from 10:00am to 12:00pm.
How often do you meet?
The “Grannies” meet once a month; the second Wednesday of the month, from September to June.
How many events do you hold each year?
The number of events vary year to year, but on average we hold 5 to 6 events annually.
How much is your membership fee?
There is no fee to become a member. We hold a 50/50 draw at each meeting whereby a voluntary $2.00 is collected by each member and at the end of the meeting a name is drawn and the winner receives half of the proceeds collected. The other half of the monies collected goes towards the meeting room rental.
Why support Grandmothers for Africa?
As a community-based partner of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, we provide support in the lives of people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in communities across sub-Saharan Africa.
Through our fundraising efforts we help to improve: Healthcare; Income Security; Nutrition; Education; and Protection from Violence.
